Basenames Launch on Base

Base, a Layer 2 network on Ethereum developed by Coinbase, is launching Basenames—subnames created through the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) infrastructure. This enables users to convert complex hexadecimal addresses into human-readable names.

According to the official website, Basenames will be “a core onchain building block that enables anyone to establish their identity on Base.”

ENS Subnames
ENS subnames are names created under an existing ENS (parent) name, allowing multiple ENS identities to be managed similarly to subdomains on traditional websites.

Any ENS domain owner, such as base.eth, can create an unlimited number of subnames or subdomains. The parent ENs name owner manages these subnames. For instance, a user named Bob can register a basename bob.base.eth.

When Basenames launches, all names will be available via a Dutch auction for users to purchase and claim. Prices will decrease over 36 hours, providing everyone an equal opportunity to secure a particular name. The premium fee will start at 100 ETH and reduce to 0.39 ETH in the first 12 hours. Once the auction concludes, no premium fee will apply.

Base’s lead, Jesse Pollak, announced on X that Basenames will launch on Tuesday, stating, “We’re going to make basenames the easiest way to get started building (or living) onchain.”
